Microchip doubles memory in LCD controllers

Microchip Technology Inc. has announced six new members to the 8bit PIC MCU family with integrated LCD modules. The PIC18F85J90 series doubles the amount of flash and RAM memory over existing 64-pin and 80-pin family members.

Self-programming flash
The PIC18F85J90 series delivers 8-32KB of self-programming flash memory, and up to 2KB of SRAM. The devices also feature an enhanced LCD module with four multiplex commons and up to 48 segments driving up to 192 pixels. Other features include seven power-managed states, a 32kHz to 8MHz internal oscillator, high core performance of up to 40MHz at 3V, and a 10bit ADC with up to 12 signal channels and 100,000 samples-per-second.

Targeting human-interface applications requiring embedded control including thermostats, utility meters and medical instrumentation, this increased amount of memory enables users to add more complex functionality such as speech playback and larger amounts of self-programming memory allocation, while taking advantage of the cost savings offered by the PIC18 "J" series' 3V manufacturing process technology, said Microchip.

The LCD module onboard the PIC18F85J90 series enables a software-programmable contrast controller, which can boost the LCD voltage, dim the display or compensate for environmental elements like temperature and lighting. These features lower the cost of the LCD glass while improving the display appearance, making advanced LCD functionality affordable to a new class of embedded display application, said Microchip.

Development support
To reduce time-to-market, all six MCUs are supported by Microchip's standard development systems including: MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (IDE), MPLAB C18 C Compiler, MPLAB ICD 2 In-Circuit Debugger and the PICDEM HPC Explorer Board (part # DM183022). In addition, the PICDEM LCD 2 Demo Board (part # DM163030) is expected to be available in May to ease development with this series' advanced LCD features.

Pricing starts at Rs.100.18 ($2.37) each in quantities of 10,000. The PIC18F85J90/84J90/83J90 devices are available in 80-pin TQFP packages, while the PIC18F65J90/64J90/63J90 parts are available in 64-pin TQFP packages.

All six of the PIC18F85J90 LCD MCUs are available for general sampling and volume production.
