RFMD integrates shielding tech into RFICs

To eliminate the need for custom external shields for RF circuits, RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD) has taken a non-traditional route and has integrated RF shielding into the RFIC or module. The strategy has reportedly reduced the volume for RF sections by about 30 to 50 per cent and offered RF components that are not sensitive to board placement.

Traditionally, an external metal "can" encapsulates and shields the RF circuit in a mobile device. Because the cans must be customised for each individual circuit board, implementing external RF shielding is costly, time consuming and has high space requirements. It also affects RF performance, requiring the shielded circuits to be retuned to counter the effects of the external shield.

By removing the sensitivity to board placement and eliminating the risk of circuit retuning, RFMD's self-shielding technology accelerates time-to-market and reduces the costs of RF implementation in mobile devices.

"Customers using products with RFMD's self shielding technology enjoy the benefits of improved RF performance, lower total cost, reduced board space requirements and overall ease of RF implementation."

The self-shielding technology will be available first in RFMD's POLARIS 3 Total Radio solution.
