MCU integrates 8bit CPU core, voice synthesis LSI

Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd has equipped its ML610300 series MCU with an 8bit CPU core and voice synthesis LSI.

By combining the CPU and voice synthesis LSI in a single chip, Oki said it has been able to reduce power consumption and package size by more than 30 per cent and 50 per cent , respectively.

The ML610300 series MCUs employ OKIADPCM2, Oki's high sound quality playback method to replay human voice more clearly by reproducing the frequency that people can hear. To control voice, the ML610300 series MCUs are designed with the 8bit RISC CPU nX-U8/100, OKI's CPU core used in small electronic equipment such as digital cameras.

This LSI includes digital Low Pass Filter (LPF) and a high-resolution 12bit D/A converter specifically used for voice. With these functions, Oki cuts out the static and high frequency noise elements to improve the reproducibility of the voice wave and achieve high-quality voice and sound. The LSI also includes peripheral functions such as a serial port, 10bit A/D converter, LED driver port and 8bit timer, which can be used for various applications.

Two models of the flash ROM-version are available in sample quantities starting this week. From May 2007, Oki will start taking orders for custom coding of the mask ROM-version, which is suitable for volume production. Oki aims to ship 10 lakh units per month for the whole series.
