Heat sinks reduce heat of high-output LEDs

Advanced Thermal Solutions Inc. (ATS) has introduced three heat sink solutions for cooling Osram's DRAGONstick LEDs and other linear LED lighting products. The ATS-486, ATS-503 and ATS-504 heat sinks mitigate the intensity of heat generated by high-output LEDs, thereby reducing temperature and extending product life.

Convection cooling
As part of the ATS maxiFLOW heat sink line, the ATS-486, ATS-503 and ATS-504 cooling devices feature a low-profile, spread fin array that maximises surface area for more effective convection (air) cooling, particularly when airflow is limited. The heat sinks are fabricated from extruded aluminium, which enhances their heat transfer properties from base to fins, while minimising their weight and cost, said the company.

The Osram DRAGONstick lights, which are used in architectural lighting applications, feature six or 12 LEDs mounted on a metal board that deliver 120-300 lumens for applications such as shelf lighting, refrigerators/freezers and display cases.

53 per cent less heat
While under development, ATS engineers performed theoretical and experimental testing on the Osram DRAGONstick LED. During laboratory testing, the Osram DRAGONstick reached a temperature of 64.9°C above ambient, measured at the thermocouple mounting pad. With the addition of a maxiFLOW heat sink, the temperature of the LED was reduced 53 per cent, for a steady state operation of 30.4°C above ambient, according to the company.

The maxiFLOW heat sinks are available un-anodised or black anodised and with or without thermal tape. Pricing starts at Rs.453.20 ($10) per 1ft lengths.
