Mixer IC suits freq-down converter

New Japan Radio Co. Ltd has announced the NJM2288, a mixer IC suitable for use in the frequency-down converter in specific extremely low-power radio equipment.

The NJM2288 consists of a mixer, a local amp and a bias circuit. It converts RF signals received by antenna and local signals from local oscillator circuit into IF signals.

Although ICs incorporating a mixer amp for small signal wireless devices exist, their lack of gain has been a problem. As a result, many engineers must design their mixer circuits with discrete components. However, if the mixer circuit is configured with discrete components, careful attention must be given to the external bias circuits in order to correct temperature characteristics, adding to engineers' burdens. The company said its NJM2278 addresses these problems with high conversion gain, efficient temperature characteristics, low voltage, low current consumption and small packaging.

Key features of NJM2288 include:

  • Low voltage operation: 2-5.5V

  • Low current consumption: 2.8mA (429MHz, 2.2V)

  • Conversion gain: 9dB (429MHz, 2.2V)

  • Conversion gain deviation: 2dB (-40°C-85°C, 429MHz, 2.2V/reference value)

  • Input frequency: 300MHz to 500MHz (recommendation range)

  • Mixer intercept point: -12dBm (429MHz, 2.2V)

  • Local input impedance: 9.1 kiloohms

  • Packaging: SOT-23-6 (MTP6) (2.9-by-2.8-by-1.3mm)

The NJM2288 is currently available in sample and production quantities. Pricing is Rs.23.67 (52 cents) per unit.
