Accelerating an earlier forecast, DisplaySearch Inc. predicted global LCD panel shipments will reach 5.51 crore units this year and 8.88 crore units in 2007.

The market research firm also said major panel makers have revised upwards their annual target shipment volumes for this year and next.

The previous LCD forecast was 5.04 crore units shipped this year and 7.67 crore in 2007. PDP shipments were forecast to reach 1.11 crore in 2006 and 1.5 crore for 2007.

Calvin Lee, director of display research for DisplaySearch Korea, told a forum that PDP shipments are expected to total as many as 1.07 crore units this year and up to 1.7 crore next year. "Global makers' target for 40-inch or larger LCD panel shipments will surpass that for PDPs next year at around 2.1 crore units," Lee said.

LG.Philips LCD is forecast to supply 1.26 crore LCD panels this year while Taiwan's AU Optronics (AUO) and Samsung Electronics will follow with 1.17 crore and 1.11 crore displays, respectively. Another Taiwanese Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) is expected to ship 94 lakh units this year.

AUO is expected to become the world's largest LCD supplier next year with 2 crore units shipped, outpacing LG.Philips LCD by 2 million LCDs, followed by CMO (1.7 crore) and Samsung (1.54 crore).

On the other hand, Matsushita's annual plasma panel shipments are forecast to reach 32 lakh units in 2006, followed by LG Electronics (up to 32 lakh) and Samsung SDI (up to 25 lakh).
