Celestica has entered a pre-existing collaboration between Freescale Semiconductor and Wavesat to enhance a platform that enables customer premises equipment (CPE) manufacturers to deliver WiMAX-enabled products to the market even faster. The comprehensive platform was demonstrated at the Freescale Technology Forum in Bangalore, India early this week.

The solution features Wavesat's WiMAX Mini-PC module and MAC software, Freescale's MPC8323E PowerQUICC II Pro processor, and Celestica's WiMAX Gateway CPE solution accelerator.

"WiMAX is gaining momentum worldwide, and turnkey solutions like ours will help drive rapid deployment of broadband wireless technology in cost-effective CPE products," said Lynelle McKay, vice president and general manager of Freescale's digital systems division. "The addition of world class technology from Celestica takes this solution to the next level by making the platform production-ready."

In-Stat projected that the number of fixed WiMAX subscribers worldwide will hit 1.6 crore by 2010, while the number of mobile WiMAX subscribers is estimated to range from 1.5 crore to 2.5 crore.

Integrated edge
"As part of our Solution Accelerator strategy, the CPE enables us to offer a pre-invested, modifiable CPE solution that lowers our telecommunications customers' costs and speeds their time-to-market," said Paul Barsley, VP of global design services at Celestica. "By leveraging Freescale's PowerQUICC II Pro processor and Wavesat's Evolutive WiMAX DM256 technology in this solution, we can offer a power-efficient, performance-enhanced CPE for WiMAX applications requiring residential or gateway SOHO platforms."

The solution supports WiMAX Forum 802.16d-2004 certification, which can be upgraded to the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard for mobility in accordance with the WiMAX Forum ETG/MTG profiles.

For customers seeking a pre-engineered, pre-developed solution for compressing product development cycles and driving lower costs, this platform offers numerous benefits, including support for processor-and memory-intensive applications including VoIP, advanced telephony, parental controls and cryptographic operations; use of commercial off-the-shelf Mini-PCI WiMAX or Cardbus ADSL/VDSL/VDSL2, HSDPA and EVDO adapters for maximum network backhaul interconnectivity; and compatibility with OTS Mini-PCI LAN options including Wi-Fi for rapid deployment.
