Soft processor boosts floating point performance by 50%

Designed for the 65nm Virtex-5 FPGA family, Xilinx Inc. has released version 5.00 of the MicroBlaze soft processor that it says boosts floating point performance by 50 per cent over previous versions.

The 32bit RISC core now delivers a 45 per cent increase in integer performance, providing 240DMIPS in Virtex-5 FPGAs. The core extends floating point performance to 50MFLOPS, a 50 per cent improvement over previous versions, according to the company.

The MicroBlaze 5.00 soft processor is built on the previous MicroBlaze 4.00, maintaining instruction-set backward compatibility. Xilinx engineers increased the MicroBlaze 5.00 core clock frequency and optimised its pipeline efficiency with an enhanced 5-stage pipeline.

MicroBlaze 5.00 has pre-built and verified ready-to-use configuration options that enable developers to jump start their embedded processing designs or customise their processor. Included are configurable cache line size options of four or eight words to tune performance with applications needs.

The MicroBlaze 5.00 soft processor core is royalty-free and is licensed as part of the Xilinx EDK U.S. list priced at Rs.22,873.95 ($495).
