CMD develops port protection solutions for HDMI

California Micro Devices (CMD) has launched the newest addition to its MediaGuard family of integrated port protection solution for high speed HDMI. The CM2030 is designed for source ports such as STBs and DVD players, while CM2031 is for HDMI sinks such as DTVs.

The seven HDMI Founder companies recently released the enhanced version of the HDMI specification, enabling the next next-generation PCs, DVD players and HDTVs. HDMI 1.3 supports 30-, 36- and 48bit colour depths, an improvement from the 24bit capacity of previous versions. The CMD solutions support the latest HDMI capabilities including higher speed and cable length support.

The two new devices are included in the company's third generation of port protection solutions. Its first line, PicoGuard diode arrays series, features ESD protection. In early 2005, CMD launched the first two offerings of MediaGuard which integrated ESD functions, level shifting and backdrive protection. The third generation incorporates the functions of the previous generations with additional features to suit HDMI 1.3.

High speed support
The MediaGuard solutions feature low capacitance ESD protection, with .9pF junction capacitance, integrated backdrive protection, level shifting and multiport support. "We believe we offer the highest level of protection, as well as the best signal integrity," said CMD director of marketing for computing and digital consumer products, Joe Salvador.

In support to HDMI 1.3 specification, the devices included additional features such as CEC slew rate limiting to help minimise ringing and EMI, hot plug active control (for CM2031) and DDC dynamic pull-ups. Additionally, the solutions do not require common mode chokes for impedance matching and supports thin dielectric board layouts.

Salvador explained that as the length of the cable increases, its capacitance increases as well. Higher capacitance prevents devices from properly synchronising. This problem is addressed with the integrated active pullup circuitry on the DDC lines of both CM2030 and CM2031. Dynamic pull-ups allow customers to use longer and cheaper cables without damaging the device.

"We are providing a solution to our customers which is going to help their systems work regardless of what cable or multiple cables the consumer attaches into it. For very simple solutions we can safeguard the customers' brand name," Salvador said.

He added that the newest CMD solutions reduce board costs by integrating all protection diodes in a single chip. Both support 2-layer and thin dielectric boards which, "allows the lowest system cost possible not only through the integration of all the external components that we pulled into a single chip but also by reducing the system cost by supporting 2 layer boards which can dramatic the total cost of the system," he said.

Both the CM2030 and CM2031 devices are available for sampling in a 38-pin TSSOP package, and are scheduled for production in Q4 2006. Pricing starts at Rs.60.88 ($1.31) and Rs.59.95 ($1.29) each in 1,000 units for CM2030 and 2031, respectively.
