HDK America Inc. unveiled what it touts as the smallest piezoresistive three-axis accelerometer with a 3-by-3-by-1mm footprint. At one-fifth the size of the previous generation product, the HAAM-325B offers comparable performance.

Based on a silicon substrate and fabricated by means of a micro-machining MEMS technology, the HAAM-325B has a high-output sensitivity of 400 mV/G (Vcc=3V). The device can detect minute amounts of 3-axis dynamic acceleration in the X, Y and Z axis, and output tilt and gravitational acceleration data simultaneously, said the company. The acceleration sensor now provides two separate terminals of interrupt output for drop detection and shock detection, in addition to a conventional standby terminal. This helps to simplify circuit application, said the company.

The HAAM-325B offers a rated acceleration of ±2G and a power-saving design, typically consuming 0.35mA and 1µA in standby. The offset voltage is 1.5V ±0.075 V (ratio-metric to supply voltage), and sensitivity is 20mV/N with a linearity of ±three per cent FS. The operating temperature range is 0 to 75°C.

These sensors are suitable for portable consumer or business product applications such as laptop computers, MP3 players, test equipment and smart mobile phones particularly where a hard drive should be protected from a fall. If a "free-fall" condition is sensed, the HAAM-325B sensor can signal the hard drive to "lock down" before impact.

Acceleration or position can be sensed to trigger other functions such as a screen change from portrait to landscape or an alarm to call attention to a device being dropped or moved. Other possible uses include the sensing of position, motion or vibration in robotics, material handling, and transportation applications.

The HAAM-325B is priced at Rs.1,211.08 ($26) each in sample quantities.
