Airbee Wireless and Zentrum Mikroelektronik Dresden AG (ZMD) have signed an agreement to integrate Airbee-ZigBee Network Software (ZNS) stack with ZMD's 900MHz ZMD44102 transceiver.

To reduce time-to-market, a complete reference design with the Texas Instruments' MSP430-1612 ultra-low power microcontroller (MCU) was also released.

OEMs designing ZigBee wireless sensor networks now have access to the industry-leading ZMD44102 radio at 900MHz paired with the leading MCU—TI's MSP430-1612, said the companies.

This teaming will offer a ready-made platform for integrators and OEMs looking for turnkey 900MHz ZigBee solutions requiring extended range and robust performance.

The ZMD44102 transceiver supports the 868.3MHz (Europe) and 902MHz to 928MHz (Americas) license-free bands. "Current and future ZigBee users can now test and compare 900 MHz vs. 2.4 GHz solutions," said said Klaus Mueller, vice president of wireless sensor networks for ZMD.

The 900MHz license-free band is expected to become popular for low power wireless applications for several reasons. Applications operating in the 2.4GHz band will experience more interference as the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and WLAN markets grow. In addition, 900MHz designs tend to be less expensive.
