A U.S. Patent and Trademark Office attorney will reportedly be posted to the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi as an intellectual property (IP) rights attaché.

According to a report in The Hindu Business Line from Kolkata, the appointment is intended to strengthen Indo-U.S. cooperation in protecting IP rights. The attaché' s job will be to work exclusively on furthering cooperation on IP rights, according to Henry Jardine, the U.S. consul-general in Kolkata.

The United States has made it a priority to help India and other countries enforce IP rights, Jardine said. He added that U.S. government is also working with India on how to leverage U.S technical assistance.

India has relatively strong patent, copyright and trademark protections, Jardine said, positioning it to become a global technology player.
