Agere Systems announced it has developed a receiver technology that will significantly improve data connectivity and call quality for mobile handsets operating over HSDPA-capable (high-speed downlink packet access) 3G/W-CDMA networks.

The technology will first be deployed in the company's X455 chipset, and the company reports that the chipset will improve transmission range in poor call conditions by as much as 25 per cent, and provide network operators with the advantage of extended cell capacities. In addition, Agere's technology enables a reduction in cell phone bill-of material (BOM) costs of more than Rs.267.84 ($6) for mass market handsets in comparison to other receiver technologies.

The X455 chipset will offer up to 3dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio performance as compared to currently available technologies by filtering out background noise and reducing transmission power.

The adaptive multi-path receiver uses signal processing techniques that exceed the industry specification for 3GPP R5 receivers to offer performance that is nearly parallel to R6 receivers in most network conditions. The X455 is a two-chip set that provides digital and analogue baseband functionality.

The product simultaneously supports Release 5 Category 6 (3.6Mbps) downlink, W-CDMA uplink and downlink (384Kbps), as well as voice services and will support true mobile broadband connectivity by enabling data downlinks at up to 3.6Mbps.

Devices will begin sampling in the second half of 2006. The company is not releasing pricing information on the chipset; however, it reports that the BOM savings and other efficiencies will enable HSDPA-capable feature phones and smart phones at price points of Rs.6,696 ($150) or less.
