New Scale Technologies has introduced a MC-1000 controller for its SQL or SQ-100 series piezoelectric Squiggle motors. This driver incorporates the features of the company's SQ-2000 benchtop power supply/motor controller into a single card that is easily integrated into OEM instruments.

The MC-1000 controller enables easy integration into OEM systems including medical, laser, optical and laboratory instruments. This Squiggle motor drive card requires a DC supply of 5V to 12V, with a 300mA maximum current. The company said actual current depends on the required drive signal amplitude for the motor. The card measures 2-by-3 inches with the height depending on the motor model.

The credit card-sized MC-1000 controller generates the two-phase ultrasonic waveforms needed to drive a tiny SQL series or SQ-100 series linear Squiggle motor. Each card drives one motor, and is configured to optimise performance for each model.

The card is controlled by ASCII commands via its RS-232 port. Users control the motor speed and direction dynamically. The card also provides on-board closed-loop position control by accepting input from an analogue position sensor or a quadrature encoder. Graphical user interface software is provided. Custom drive cards are available.

Available now, the starting price for the MC-1000 Squiggle is Rs.17,712 ($400) for single units.
