Adding virtual reality to cell phones

Various applications are being squeezed into the mobile phone, but the most powerful one will be the application that can extend to the dimension of human senses. Bringing senses to the digital world, Immersion Corp. is a pioneer developer and licensor of haptic technology. The company focuses on "touch," unlike others that usually focus on sight and sound.

Adding touch sensations to applications makes a big difference in user experience, offering an unprecedented degree of realism.

"There is a big difference between playing a simple game and engaging in a totally new sensory experience with a mobile phone. Haptics can give users a more engaging experience," said John Grundy, VP and general manager of Immersion's mobility business group.

The haptics market will grow in parallel with the mobile gaming market. Samsung has already launched the SCH-G100 for SK Telecom Co. Ltd and SCH-G1000 for KTF Co. Ltd using Immersion's haptic technology, VibeTonz. SK Telecom signed a license from Immersion in May 2005 and launched seven mobile games using haptic technology in October 2005. Nokia Corp. has also developed a mobile ping-pong game using the touch feedback sensations.

"In the future, everything we can imagine will be in the world of mobile phones," said Grundy.
