JAM Tech expands to Singapore

JAM Technologies has opened headquarters here in a move that CEO Mike Holt said positions the company to better supply one of its key markets.

While declining to specify how much was invested in the Singapore facility, Holt said the fabless firm based in Austin, Texas, would embark on a "fairly significant" hiring spree here in 2006, taking on mixed signal designers and operations staff for the facility, which will span "all disciplines."

The Singapore headquarters will be responsible for sales as well as applications engineering and design for the firm's lines of digital audio amplifiers, "complemented" by JAM's technology teams in the United States, Holt said.

Holt said the decision to locate here was based on the city-state's ready availability of suppliers and manufacturing facilities.

JAM's presence is important since Asia "is our business," Holt said, with the company supplying audio chips to a wide range of flat-panel TV and mobile device makers."Our customers and suppliers are all in Asia, so it's our main market," he added.

The company also unveiled a line of amplifier chips for the digital TV industry based on a digital-input, open-loop design. Already in volume production, the True Fidelity amplifier combines efficiency and increased battery life with full, 16-bit analogue quality audio, he said.

"Markets had to choose between these two things before, but now there's no need," Holt said.

JAM is also concentrating on broadening its presence in other market segments such as mobile devices.

Despite lingering uncertainty in the consumer sector JAM is forecasting steady growth in 2006 in line with most of the semiconductor industry, Holt said.

"The market for digital amps is growing very rapidly as there's a huge transition from analogue to digital," he said. "With our products, we are positioned to benefit from that industry trend."
