Korea Telecom, Alcatel target WiBro

Korea Telecom and France's Alcatel said that they will establish a joint research centre in a move to gain the top position in a recently-certified mobile wireless broadband service called WiBro.

The partners will build a "WiBro Reality Centre" where it will conduct compatibility tests between basestations and mobile devices as well as demonstrate a range of WiBro-related equipment and services, the companies said here.

Groundbreaking for the centre is scheduled for next spring. The new center will help with joint development of new mobile broadband applications. Other Korean telecommunications device developers will also participate, aiming to spread WiBro service worldwide.

KT said it would focus on introducing a range of new WiBro-oriented solutions to help subscribers gain easier access to the new mobile broadband service. Alcatel will provide infrastructure, including wired and wireless service access equipment and core networking facilities.

The companies did not elaborate on how much will be invested in the project. Last month KT announced that it will roll out WiBro service by the middle of 2006. The 3.5G mobile broadband service, also known as mobile WiMax, is based on a sibling (802.16e) of the IEEE802.16 spec. Fixed WiMax, championed by Intel Corp., is another scion (802.16 d). Earlier this week, the IEEE approved the 802.16e standard.

Unlike fixed WiMax, WiBro technology allows subscribers to stay connected to the Internet when moving between cells. In theory, WiBro subscribers can download up to 10MBps while driving at 75 miles per hour.

"We are convinced that the two companies will grab the top position in the mobile broadband industry by maximising both sides' synergy effects through this business tie-up," said Hong Won-Pyo, senior manager of KT's Portable Internet Business Department.
