PXI 4009Austriamicrosystems AG has introduced the AS8218 and AS8228 SoCs for LCD-based, single-phase meter applications meet Indian utility anti-tamper requirements.

The ICs incorporate all the required functional blocks for single-phase metering including a precision energy measurement front-end, an 8-bit microcontroller, real-time clock, LCD driver and programmable multi-purpose inputs/outputs. These ICs drive a liquid crystal display (LCD) of up to 96-segments and up to 12 programmable inputs/outputs for a host of interface or display requirements.

"With our AS8218 and AS1828 devices we accommodate all the stringent anti-tamper requirements of the Indian market while offering to Indian meter manufacturers a flexible, highly integrated and competitive solution," says Matjaz Novak, marketing director at austriamicrosystems. "Our on-chip user programmable DSP and embedded 8-bit microcontroller offers the meter manufacturer the possibility to develop and produce a wide range of meters with a single, cost optimized hardware platform".

PXI 4009The fully programmable industry standard 8-bit 8051 compatible microcontroller is integrated and includes 24KB of program RAM and 1KB of data RAM. Two universal asynchronous receiver transmitters (UARTs) provide for external communication. A programmable energy LED pulse output may be displayed through one of the multi-purpose input/outputs.

The precision output along with an on-chip pulse counter allows for fast automatic digital calibration. An on-chip ±1.4ppm real-time clock/calendar (RTC) with two alarm registers and battery back-up is provided for complex tariff applications. A 4-wire Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) ensures direct connection of most standard external EEPROM devices. The memory size is selectable in binary steps up to 32KB.
