Hall-effect latch suits motor-speed and direction-sensing apps

Allegro MicroSystems Inc. has introduced its new A1242, a new two-wire, chopper-stabilized latch, that is suited for use in motor-speed and direction-sensing applications, as well as in other applications where the sensor is located far from the electronic control unit (ECU).

A key feature of the new A1242 sensor is it requires one less wire in the wiring harness than comparable three-wire Hall-effect latches. The two-wire feature also provides inherent short/open detection, said the company.

Operating accurately and consistently in harsh environments, the new A1242 current-output, Hall-effect latch can be used in automotive, industrial and consumer applications. The sensor uses a patented high-frequency chopper-stabilization technique on Allegro's new DABIC5 (Digital Analog BiCMOS) process to achieve magnetic stability over temperature. The device also offers two different output current level options for greater flexibility.

This device provides on-chip transient protection, while a zener clamp on the power supply protects against over-voltage conditions on the supply line. The output of this family will switch HIGH in the presence of a sufficiently large south-pole magnetic field and LOW in the presence of a sufficiently large north-pole magnetic field.

The A1242 is priced at 50 cents in quantities of 10,000. Supplied in surface-mount (LH) and insertion-mount (UA) packages, delivery is six to eight weeks for the UA package, and 10 to 12 weeks for the LH package.
