USB TTL I/O module delivers higher drive

A few months ago, I reviewed a number of Data Translation's ECONseries of USB 2.0 data-acquisition and control modules, among them a digital I/O module called the DT9817. It provided 28 input/output lines. The company has now expanded its offerings with a $179 DT9817-H model, also billed as a "mini-instrument" for USB 2.0.

This newest -H spin of the ECONseries DT9817 offers the same number of I/O lines as the plain vanilla version, but they're high-drive lines. It's for applications requiring high-current outputs. The DT9817-H, based on TTL emulations, will sink 64mA, or source 15mA, at standard logic levels. The DT9817 forerunner will sink 10mA and source 2 mA.

Of course, like so many things in engineering, there are tradeoffs. In this case, the -H module demands almost 500mA from your PC's USB port. In contrast, the earlier model would pull less than 100mA.

Software and connections

The DT9817-H ships with Data Translation's GO! Application, ensuring use right out of the box. Signal connections are made directly to the module's built-in screw terminals. The unit itself plugs into any PC USB port.

For advanced applications, ECONseries modules ship with additional software tools, including DTx-EZ for VisualBASIC.NET and C#, DT-LV Link for National Instruments LabVIEW, and an evaluation copy of Data Translation's DT Measure Foundry software. DT Measure is a test-and-measurement application builder that comes with several ready-to-measure applications.
