French telecommunications firm Alcatel will take a 51-percent equity stake in a joint venture to pursue broadband wireless research with the Indian government's Center for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).

The total cost of the joint venture will be about $48 million, according to a statement by the Indian government, which cleared the proposal in New Delhi on Friday (Sept. 2). The venture will be located in Chennai in southern India.

The new center will employ 300 engineers, and will focus on research into wireless access technologies such as WiMax. A specific aim is to spread broadband connectivity in India's urban and rural areas. The joint venture may also look at manufacturing WiMax products in India.

Alcatel is in the process of investing $600 million in India over the next few years and increasing staff strength from 750 now to about 2,000 by the end of 2006.
