New capabilities in Mentor Graphics' HyperLynx signal-integrity product will help facilitate PCB designs that use Serdes interconnects, according to the company. Improvements in HyperLynx 7.5 include a new schematic editor and via visualizer.

Serdes is a rapidly emerging technology for connecting ICs and fpgas using multi-Gbps serial drivers and receivers. It lets components communicate through differential pins rather than conventional wide-bus structures.

"Serdes takes designers from a realm they're fairly comfortable with in signal integrity up into frequencies in the RF and microwave domain," said Steve Kaufer, director of engineering for the HyperLynx product line. "It's dragging digital designers into areas they're not familiar with. Thus, tools are becoming a key enabler."

Claimed to be the most widely-used signal-integrity tool in the world, HyperLynx provides both a pre-layout "what if" analysis and a post-layout analysis based on routed PCB data. To help facilitate the "what if" analysis of high-frequency Serdes-based designs, HyperLynx 7.5 adds a new schematic editor for interconnect.

"The traditional HyperLynx schematic editor was sort of a point-and-click kind of thing," Kaufer said. "But now that we need to drop arbitrary blocks such as spice models or S-parameter models into it, we decided to go with a more traditional-looking schematic. It's a big change, but it's still tailored for interconnect simulation."

To ease the post-layout analysis of high-frequency designs, HyperLynx 7.5 adds a via visualizer. This allows users to right-click on any via in the design, and view a geometric cross-section. "Vias in the past tended to be modeled with just capacitance, but now that there's a full electrical model behind them, all the details of the geometry make a difference," Kaufer said.

The new release also claims an easier-to-use batch mode engine, user-interface improvements, additional Serdes eye masks, SPICE model enhancements and over 13,000 additional IBIS models.
