Tact switches suit handheld devices

ITT Electronic Components has launched a new series of low-profile, keypad tactile switches that combine performance, usability and long life for handheld device applications such as PDAs, smart phones, MP3 players and digital cameras. These switches can also be used in systems that require a customized keyboard interface.

Measuring 4.3-by-4.1mm with a 0.58mm thickness, the new KMX tact switches are designed to save PC-board space when compared to dome array- and keyboard-style interfaces. These SPST normally-open switches close with an audible click, and its long travel distance supports a better tactile feel for the user than a standard keyboard, said the company. The switch is certified for 250,000 cycles, and offers a switching simultaneity of 0.05mm (max).

Each KMX switch attaches to the board via four gull-wing terminals to provide good co-planarity and reliability. These tact switches also use stand-off terminals, which provide additional space under the switch for PC-board traces.

The switches are available with or without an actuator incorporated into the assembly (KMX1 and KMX2 parts, respectively), a feature that provides a better-centered actuation, said the company. Each switch also incorporates a ground pin for electrostatic discharge protection. Gold and silver contact plating options are supported and the device is compliant with the RoHS directive.

Pricing for the KMS gold and silver plating options is approximately 20 cents and 15 cents, respectively, in quantities of 100,000.
